Village Hall
Port Isaac Village HallThis is your Village Hall - support it and use it!
Built in 1895 as the Temperance Hall, the Village Hall is situated probably just about central for everyone. At most the Hall is just ten minutes walk from anywhere in the village. With its own garden, the Hall has a view to die for looking out over the old village, Lobber Cliff and out to sea.
With central heating and catering facilities the Hall is now licensed and is the ideal, and well used, venue for dances, discos, parties, concerts etc. The Hall can comfortably seat an audience of 110 and holds 150 people for other less formal events. A regularly tuned piano is available for use; a barbecue and garden furniture are also available for use by hall users; there is a small outdoor play area and outdoor toys for young children.

A Hall for us all
In 2000 things were looking pretty bleak for Port Isaac Village Hall. It was badly in need of some major tlc and refurbishment. Hall bookings were practically non-existent. It looked as if the Hall would close. A public meeting was held. It seemed we had a Village Hall that was very dear to a lot of people's hearts and a blott on the landscape as far as others were concerned.
Taking completely by surprise by the sheer numbers that turned up to the meeting, the Chairman, Steve Appleby, stressed that, despite popular belief, the Village Hall was not yet bankrupt and, providing a willing committee came forward to keep things running, the Hall would not close. A fair number of villagers felt that there was life in the old gal yet and a committee was elected from the floor with the short term view of keeping the Hall open and the long term view of raising funding to completely renovate the Hall.
The Hall is still open and refurbishment is ongoing. It was given a huge boost by the BBC TV programme DIY SOS who took on the challenge of renovating our Hall for a May Bank Holiday Special programme in 2001. Our local community showed the whole country just what community spirit means lending their labour, their time, their ideas, their vehicles, garages, houses, food the list is endless. It was a weekend of very hard work, fun and laughter that will long be remembered.
We ended up with a Hall to be proud of. But what a lot of people don't realise is that we had to make a substantial financial contribution so fundraising continued big time to raise the £2000 shortfall.
And still the fundraising continues to finance the ongoing renovation. We have recently completely overhauled both the ladies and gents toilets and next on the agenda is improvements to the access to the Hall watch this space.
